THE DETROIT RIVER: A WATERWAY TO THE WORLD

A HISTORY OF SHIPPING
From the time of the native people to the arrival of the French settlers to today, the Detroit River has been an important waterway to move goods to and from the Upper Great Lakes and Detroit.
You can still see large freighters bringing goods that we need from around the world and taking goods that we make to faraway countries.
That’s A Lot of Water!
The Detroit River flows at 87,516,000 gallons per minute (gpm).
That means it could fill up Comerica Park once every 2 1/2 minutes.
