UNWANTED RIVER TRAVELERS

Many invasive species in the Great Lakes travel through the Detroit River. They stow away in the ballast water of ships.
Ballast water is pumped in and out of ships to help them balance. The standards for how to handle ballast water continue to be improved to help stop the release of Invasive specIes.

OVERSEAS PORT
As cargo is taken off the ship, the ballast tanks fill up with water, bringing in various species that live in oceans around the world.

VOYAGE
During the voyage, the cargo area is empty and the ballast tanks are full of water
DETROIT RIVER PORT
When the ship arrives at the port, the cargo area fills up as the ballast tanks are emptied, releasing water and any species inside.
RETURN TRIP
The cargo area is full and the ballast tanks are empty when the ship travels to cities around the world.
