Michigan’s Bear Facts:
– Black bears are the only bears that live in Michigan.
– Adult black bears are about 3 feet tall at the shoulder when on all fours and about 3-5 feet long. Adult female black bears weigh about 90 to 300 pounds, and adult males weigh about 130 to 500 pounds.
– Bears usually go in their dens in December and come out in March or April.
– A mother bear gives birth, usually every other year in January, to one to three baby bears (cubs). Newborn cubs are about the size of a soda can.
Black bears are hungry omnivores that eat both plants and animals.
They love to chow down on acorns, berries, beech nuts, roots, bees, ants, beetles and small animals such as mice, squirrels and woodchucks.
Black bears have been known to eat 25,000-30,000 berries per day.
