When you’re in Detroit, you may be standing on a salt mine that is 1,200 feet beneath your shoes. If you’re in Midland, you may be on top of oil or gas deposits that can be used to heat your home.
Go to the Upper Peninsula, and you could be walking above copper, iron, nickel or other metals beneath your feet.

Detroit Salt Mine

Salt has been mined from under Detroit since 1895. It’s used to keep roads clear in the winter.
The Detroit salt mine shaft goes down 1,200 feet. Some rooms in the mine have walls, floors and ceilings completely made of salt.
