NATURAL RESOURCES ARE FUN FOR YOU

The Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund and State Park Endowment Fund turn non-renewable resources into outdoor recreation. Here’s how:
1. Oil, gas and other mineral resources that belong to the people of Michigan are leased to companies
2. Money from leasing and royalties (if minerals are removed and sold from leased areas are used to help buy public lands. These funds are also used to build and improve parks, trails and public recreation areas.
3. Tourists come to visit the parks, trails and outdoor areas, which adds to the economy.
4. Michigan residents enjoy a higher quality of life and great outdoor recreation.

HEATING HOMES WITH HELP FROM ANCIENT CORAL REEFS

When the ancient seas that covered Michigan dried up, heat and pressure turned organic matter from plants and animals into natural gas and oil.
Large amounts of gas and oil built up in fossilized coral reefs. These reefs have been an important source of oil and gas production.
Oil and natural gas are also found in non-reef reservoirs, including sandstones and shales.
There are oil fields in 64 of Michigan’s 83 counties, all of them in the Lower Peninsula. Oil is used to make gasoline and plastics.
Natural gas from Michigan heats about four out of five Michigan homes.
