HEMLOCK WOOLLY ADELGID (Adelges tsugae)
This small aphid-like bug sucks the plant juices from hemlocks and injects toxic saliva while feeding. Soon the tree’s needles and buds start to die.
Without the hemlock, many birds lose their habitat. Hemlock trees also help keep streams cool. These streams are home to trout, crawfish, salamanders and aquatic insects. If hemlocks die, the streams may become too warm for these creatures to survive.
