WHITE-NOSE SYNDROME: BATS IN TROUBLE

Some bats are in danger of extinction from an invasive disease called white-nose syndrome (WNS) – caused by a white fungus, which infects the skin of the muzzle, ears and wings of hibernating bats.
WNS is usually spread from bat to bat, but humans can also accidentally carry it from one cave to another.

From the first appearance of WNS in 2006 through 2015, WNS appeared in 25 US states, including Michigan, and five Canadian provinces. During this nine-year period, WNS affected 11 bat species – killing more than 6 million bats.
