THE FIRST BOWHUNTERS

At the end of the ice age, (9,500-14,800 years ago), people in what is now Michigan used hand-thrown spears with stone tips to kill animals as large as mastodons. As time passed and the climate warmed, they developed atlatls that let them throw spears farther and with greater force.
Some 1,000-1,500 years ago, they began using bows and arrows, which allowed them to shoot further and with more accuracy. No matter what tool they used, they had to be expert stalkers and know the habits of their prey.

The animals gave them food, bones for tools, hides for clothing and shelter, and material for spiritual and decorative objects.

BOWHUNTING IN PROGRESS:

Because you have to get close to prey, bowhunting requires stealth–that means you have to move through the woods secretly and quietly. Bowhunters must learn to think like their prey and become very good at scouting and tracking game.
