CAUTION: DON'T FLUSH THAT!

DON’T: Flush expired or unwanted prescription and over-the-counter drugs down the toilet or drain.

DO: Return unwanted or expired prescription and over-the-counter drugs to your city’s or county’s drug take-back program. If your community doesn’t have a drug take-back program, follow these steps:

1. Remove drugs from their container.
2. Mix drugs with cat litter or used coffee grounds
– something that would make the drug undesirable to others.
3. Put the mixture into a disposable container with a lid, such as an empty margarine tub, or into a sealable bag.
4. Put the sealed container with the drug mixture in the trash.

Never use the toilet as a trash can.

Your home is connected to our rivers and lakes, and whatever you flush, such as medicines, chemicals, poisons, and other toxins, can harm our water supply. Water treatment plants are generally not equipped to remove all medicines from the water. Medicines can pass through the water treatment plant and end up in rivers and lakes – harming fish, frogs, and other water life. Plus, rivers and lakes may be the source for your drinking water
