– ANTLERS: Grow each year on male elk, weigh up to 40 pounds and are shed annually
– WINTER COAT: Head, neck and legs are dark brown; sides and back are much lighter
– SUMMER COAT: Deep red-brown
– YOUNG: Calves born late May, early June; weigh 25-30 pounds
– BREEDING: Late September to early October
– HEIGHT: 4½ to 5 feet at shoulder
– WEIGHT: 350-900 pounds
– FOOD grass, shrubs, trees

- Open grassy areas
