You love the wilderness because – it’s wild!
It’s up to all of us to keep it wild and safe.
Here are some ways to help protect public lands for you and future visitors:
PLAN AHEAD AND BE PREPARED
Learn about the area you’ll visit. Prepare for extreme weather, hazards and emergencies. Take a compass and map.
CAMP ON DURABLE SURFACES
Look for durable surfaces such as camp sites, rock, gravel, dry grasses or snow
Good campsites are found, not made
LEAVE WHAT YOU FIND
Only take photographs. Leave rocks. animals and howers for others to enjoy
MINIMIZE CAMPFIRE IMPACT
Where fires are permitted, use fire rings,
fire pans or mound fires. Keep fires small.
Put campfires out completely and scatter the cool ashes
PACK IT IN; PACK IT OUT:
Don’t leave any trash or food behind
HANG A BEAR BAG
To avoid attracting bears, hang a bag
with your food from a tree limb. The ideal location for a bear bag is 100 feet from your campsite, 12 feet above the ground and far enough away from the tree(s) to prevent reaching or jumping.
This keeps food away from a bear’s reach and helps keep you and the bears safe
BE CONSIDERATE
Be courteous and respectful of other campers. Avoid making loud noises.
and camp away from trails and other visitors.
Don’t share your food with wildlife, not even crumbs. Human food isn’t healthy
for wildlife and can make wild animals become a nuisance or even dangerous.
